Test Your Smoke Alarm Monthly

Press the test button on each smoke alarm to make sure it sounds. If it does not sound, replace the battery or have the alarm serviced. You should test all smoke alarms in your home at least monthly.

Make Sure They are Located Properly

Smoke alarms should be installed on every level of your home – including cellars and attics They should also be installed in every bedroom, as well as in areas of the home with obvious fire risk (i.e. kitchens and rooms with fireplaces).

Keep Your Smoke Alarms Clean

Smoke alarms can become dirty over time, which can interfere with their ability to work properly. Vacuum the smoke alarm’s sensing chamber every few months to remove dust and debris.

Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years

Did you know that smoke alarms have a lifespan of 10 years? After 10 years, they may not be able to detect smoke as effectively. This is why it’s absolutely important to keep a note of when your smoke alarm was purchased. 

Do Not Disable Your Smoke Alarm

Some people disable smoke alarms because they find the sound annoying. However, this is a very dangerous practice. If you disable your smoke alarms, you will not be alerted to a fire, which could put you and your family at risk.

Have Your Smoke Alarm Professionally Installed

If you are not comfortable installing smoke alarms yourself, have a qualified electrician or fire alarm technician do it for you. They will make sure the alarms are installed properly and that they are working properly.
